“I found out that for a family like ours, we wouldn’t have to worry about affording Harvard. Harvard has such an amazing financial aid program that for us in reality it was much more affordable then attending any of the state schools. And for me Harvard wasn’t just for me, it was for my whole family, and I think my whole family has benefitted immensely from our experience at Harvard.“

Regardless of how the same or different it looks from other people’s experiences, or from the way other people are moving through Harvard. Take advantage of all of the different avenues that there are for you to make it your own. This is your four years at this place. Make Harvard your home. One being a general college thing – being close to your friends. Never in your life will you probably be within 30 seconds of everyone you care about. Two, the food. I don’t know how to cook food. If I try to cook chicken, I’m going to get salmonella. I have no idea, so that I’m going to miss. At Harvard, I’m going to miss the Hasty Pudding, because I’m never going to do theater again probably, and it’s something that’s such a safe space. It’s a space that’s let’s you be yourself and be the biggest person you can be, and you always have fun, and I know when I step in there I’m going to have a good time and not have to care about anything. Those are all things I’m going to miss.” - Dan, Class of 2017
It’s super cool, just to have such a massive group of people do something that is way out of their comfort zone. They are not getting any academic credit for it – not getting any sort of prize or acknowledgement or anything – and are honestly just there to dance and have fun and to make friends. That’s probably one of the best parts of my four years here.” - Elaine, Class of 2017
To have been fortunate enough to self-actualized or have reached your mountaintop, to know what that feels like, is such a rare and special moment. But even more importantly, where I’ve been able to have this experience, I feel it’s necessary to look outside myself to try to provide that opportunity for other people. One thing that scares me is complacency, and Harvard has been very good about making sure that doesn’t happen. There’s always another challenge around the corner. I think I’ve really grown, and I don’t think I’ve lost my way. I don’t know exactly what question I want to spend my life answering, or in what space I want to occupy to help drive progress after Harvard. But my moral compass will point in the same direction, and in so many ways I think Harvard and the people here have made me a much better person. I’m excited to see how I can apply what Harvard has endowed me with over these past four years.” - Michael, Class of 2017
He said ‘I was waiting for you to get to that. I always knew’ and I said ‘You could have saved me two years of lab,’ but he wanted me to figure it out myself. I feel like there’s never a wasted class at Harvard. Even if the class doesn’t end up counting towards your degree, you inevitably get something out of it, and there’s no harm in experimenting. If you do find a new interest, maybe you get a secondary in something you had never thought about, or you somehow find a way to incorporate it into your concentration. Give yourself a little bit of a taste of new things” - Andrea, Class of 2017
It’s still shocking to me that I got into Harvard, and now that I’m about to finish. It’s crazy how quickly this time has passed. I’m very proud. Not only of myself and what I’ve been able to do, but also knowing that despite my parents not going to college they’ve been my backbone for the four years here. They’ve just tried to provide as much emotional support as they could. It’s been a really interesting four years, in terms of growth. There were ups and downs, but through it all I’m really happy with who I am. On Thursday, I think the achievements will speak more volume than the difficulties. It’s going to be nice to feel like ‘I did it,’ and know that I’ve been able to come to Harvard, hopefully make a difference, and feel proud with who I am exiting.” - Ted, Class of 2017
